STRIKING THE ROCK
IN THEIR OWN NAME
THE ROCK at Meribah is a prophecy of Jesus Christ the foundation stone of the Church, the heavenly city. Why Moses struck the rock in his own name remains a mystery to this day. In a moment of supreme disdain and inexplicable pride, the prophet acted as if drawing water from the rock for the thirsty Hebrews was his own doing, as if his own sanctity made God do it. Certainly Moses’ human intention was not in harmony with God’s power. [Num 20:12]
“STRIKE THE shepherd that the sheep may be scattered,” lamented Zechariah. [Zech13:7] The enemies of God struck at Christ, hoping to shatter his Kingdom. They pierced Jesus and hoisted him on the cross in their own name—as if their own power delivered him into their hands. They neither heard or understood what Jesus said: “No one takes (my life) from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.” [Jn 10:18] The enemies of God who struck the shepherd found themselves scattered to make way for the Church.
SHOW FORTH SANCTITY
THE PRIEST-CELEBRANT prays in the Mass that the Lord’s Body and Blood may not be cause for his condemnation. [SACRAMENTARY The Order of Mass, “Breaking of the Bread”] Should a priest offer the sacrifice in his own name, in his own power, or with the intention to “lord it over” the gathered worshippers, he will condemn himself.
MAY GOD have mercy on priests who deprive the Mass of its universal beauty and dignity, who disdain the excellence of Holy Orders, and who deride the Mother who gave them birth. May priests never forget that by the “imposition of hands” over the bread and wine placed on the altar (Gk. epiclesis: invocation), they strike the rock. Holy Mother Church, may the minds and hearts of all your priests be pure to show forth the sanctity of Jesus Christ, our great High Priest.
