LENT - Index"SOMEONE TO REMEMBER" (Ash Wednesday) On the hot, dusty day of August 05th, 1949, a storm occurred in the heavily wooded Rocky Mountains of Montana at a place called Mann Gulch. Neither rain, hail, sleet or snow, this was a storm of fire. "FRAGRANT OFFERING" (Lent Week 1 Year A) When God purged sin from Eden, the garden forfeited the intimate presence of man, its loveliest flower. "SOJOURN, EMBARK, BEHOLD!" (Week 1 Year B) In the time of Noah, humankind was corrupt in God's sight and delighted in evil. Because of its wickedness and wanton violence, the Lord regrets commanding man to be fruitful and multiply. "WORDS AND DEEDS" (Week 1 Year C) Satan, the Prince of Darkness, tempted Jesus during the forty days of his desert retreat. Turn this rock into bread. Worship me. Jump off this tower, he tempted, angels will catch you. "KNOWING THAT HE KNOWS" (Week 2 Year A) The prayers of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass speak eloquently of the plenitude of God's divine life and the infinitude of his boundless truth. These expressions help us to understand the nature of God. "NO EASY ESCAPE" (Week 2 Year B) Both stories are about encounters with God. Both encounters take place upon mountain tops. The Hebrew people believed that God could be found in high, remote places. "REAL HUMAN RACE" (Week 2 Year C) In the Australian movie Gallipoli, a handsome, athletic, young man teams up with his uncle, a gruff, hard, grizzled old man. The young man is a runner. The old man is his trainer. "SOUL OF MY SOUL" (Week 3 Year A) The human soul exists, spiritual and immortal. Like the clay of the Samaritan woman's water jar, it has a form. It contains the intellect, which is more than the brain, and the will, which is more than the emotions. "BIRD AND NEST" (Week 3 Year B) When Jesus was an infant, Mary and Joseph brought him to the temple in Jerusalem for religious purification rites and to present him to the Lord. "WHAT WILL POUR OUT?" (Week 3 Year C) A little boy related the most exciting part of his summer camping trip: "We didn't know where we were, so we just unrolled our sleeping bags. And Daddy told us to climb right in with our clothes on and go to sleep." "FRUITFUL OPPORTUNITY" (Week 4 Year A) Without exaggeration, we may say that Jesus’ cure of the man born blind is a powerful recapitulation of the creation of light. "IN EVERY GENERATION" (Week 4 Year B) It is God, not man, who consecrates the temple and the Holy of Holies. Without God, nothing is made holy, for God is the origin of all sanctity. "GOD KNOWS" (Week 4 Year C) Some say that every character in a dream represents a particular aspect or manifestation of the person dreaming. From time to time we recall a dream experience which vividly confirms this. "LAZARUS, COME OUT!" (Week 5 Year A) The Mount of Olives, familiar to most Christians for its Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus' jubilant procession into Jerusalem, and later his ascension to the right hand of God, proves to be the dramatic setting for still another miraculous event in salvation history. "INSTRUMENTS OF GRACE" (Week 5 Year B) The most sublime prayer in all Christendom comprises one sentence: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!" This is the prayer of piety. "WORD OF JUSTICE, WORD OF MERCY" (Week 5 Year C) What did Jesus write on the ground with his finger? Why does John's gospel recall this action twice without telling us what Jesus wrote? Was this simply a case of the evangelist's absent-mindedness? |
