LABOR OF LOVE

SAINT PAUL affirms what we know in our hearts. The keystone of each of our lives is truth. St. Paul writes about the truth of love. Consider love as the two sides of an arch, with each stone as a different aspect of your personhood. You have many rough and unseemly stones in front of you which need to be shaped and prepared to fit the keystone at the arch's apex. These stones include such things as talents, virtues, generosity, moral and ethical behavior, beauty, intimacy, intellect and sexuality. There are others, of course.

WHAT HAPPENS between the Builder and his stones is called the work of love. God works with each stone carefully. He shapes each one, crafting it to fit neatly with the next. God seeks craftsmen to help him. He wants you to cooperate with him so that you will be a worthy "labor of love."

PERHAPS THE hardest thing for any human being to deal with is sexuality. You stand in wonder of it, yet you fear it. You and I know that in this imperfect and sinful world, we often do not understand our own actions. When we want to do good, we do the very thing we hate. [cf. Rom 7:14-25] And then we belittle ourselves in our shame. The truth is that human beings everywhere are intimidated by the power of their sexuality. But you are called to perfect your sexuality and understand its human and divine meaning like any other gift God has given you. You have to spend time in the quarry. Sexuality is but one of many stones.

UNLIKE AN ordinary stonemason or sculptor who chooses his stones, you do not have the luxury of picking and choosing the basic blocks with which God made you. Work with what God has given you. Cooperate with God. Care for the edifice he has entrusted to you. Dedicate it to a noble purpose.

TO EACH of us, God has provided enough for the work of sanctification. Learn to love each part which makes you an indivisible whole. Then pray, O God help me to see myself as you see me.
