DOES IGNORANCE JUSTIFY ABORTION?

QUESTION:

A CATHOLIC religious sister whom I have helped in the past is pro-abortion. She said abortion is okay since "no one knows exactly when the soul enters the body". Apart from praying for her, what I can say or do?

ANSWER:

IT COMES down to God's law or sister's warped way of thinking. The Catholic sister has to abort God's law first before she can celebrate aborting other women's unborn children. Sister's is a law of self-delusion: If you can't identify the moment when God gives a new human being his soul, you are free to abort the baby. Sister's celebration of ignorance as a raison d'etre to kill is a grotesque example of the distortion of the logical relationship between ideas. (Lat. argumentum ad ignorantiamIgnorant of the right, she says, means that one is free to do wrong.

IN THIS morally stupid way of thinking, sister could justify killing anyone--I am free to kill the man next door, because I don't know exactly when he will become "neighbor". She fantasizes that ignorance removes all culpability for unprovoked overt hostile attacks against the innocent and defenseless. Sister's disordered thinking eviscerates the Sacrament of Reconciliation as the normative means of grace by which sin and guilt are absolved. Does anyone know when sister's soul will leave her body at death? Not one? Does this ignorance authorize persons stronger than her to take her life? Hardly! Hands off the unborn, sister.

APOLOGIA FOR WORSHIPING DEATH

JUSTIFYING MEDICALIZED killing of human beings by a solemn imputation to the divine is precisely the transmogrification gleefully employed by the National Socialists (20th C. Germany) to justify the extermination of European Jews:  God did not intend the Jews to contribute to the Germanic race, so we conclude they must die. The merciless Nazi hierarchy judged the Jews to be outside the reach of divine or human solicitude; hence, millions of innocent mothers, fathers and children were exterminated without mercy.

HAS THE Catholic sister peered into the abyss of genocide? Can the sister comprehend for five minutes the holocaust of over 50 million aborted unborn children in this nation? Even five minutes of honest contemplation of such horror would be sufficient for her to reform. To justify the extermination of innocent and helpless unborn human life by unctuously invoking man's ignorance of God's transcendent creative powers is ghastly and bizarre. It is a crude apologia for worshiping death and the grotesque capacity of sinful man to create meaning out of nothing.  [cf. Robert J. Lifton THE NAZI DOCTORS Perseus Books: NY 1986 pp. 458-459]

TIME GROWS SHORT

REGARDING THE truth about the creation of the human soul, please refer to sections #362 - 368 in the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. Whereas in the past our ancestors argued passionately and long about the origin of the human soul, time grows short in these last days. For faithful disciples there is much genuine work remaining to be done in the Lord's Vineyard. Unrepentant Catholics who advocate abortion saying we don't know when the soul enters the body are condemned by their own errors and the authentic revelation of Jesus Christ to his Spirit-filled Church.

THE ACT of justifying and pandering abortion is mortal sin.  [cf. CCC #'s 2270-2083]  Illustrative of the Churchs 2,000 year pro-life history is the DIDACHE, a first century work: "Do not kill a fetus by abortion or commit infanticide.” Then, as now, anyone who panders to abortion is an instrument of death in the Culture of Death. Such are apostles of Satan and his crowning work of tyranny and domination over the weak, helpless and innocent members of the human family. We cannot condone the killing of the unborn and call ourselves Catholic and Christian.

WAR AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN

BY NO stretch of the imagination is abortion harmonious with the Church's mission. Abortion is war against the human person and most especially war against women and children. Abortion and contraception are First World compulsions. They are pandered as lifestyle perquisites uniquely suited to wealth and power. “Choice” is the mantra of convenience in societies obsessed by personal luxury and autonomy and fearful of impoverished Third World populations.

ABORTION IS the universal remedy prescribed by American and European abortion ideologues to avoid honestly confronting the colossal injustices being committed against women and children throughout the world: the wholesale collusion of males in the United States in the abortion of their children and their cold-blooded rebuff of the consequences, the staggering numbers of women and children enslaved in Muslim societies, the pervasive degradation and mutilation of women in caste-structured Third World societies, the scourge of AIDS ravaging and destroying millions of women, children and families in Africa, the forced abortion and sterilization of women in China who have more than two children etc.

ONE COULD provide any number of further examples but these suffice to make the point. Patently obvious is the fact that the vocabulary of abortion is silenced before these bona fide issues. Can anyone doubt why the affluent high priests and priestesses of abortion cannot care less about the afflicted and impoverished world beyond the fog of their evil incense? Moreover, are abortion partisans so utterly insensitive to the authentic plight of women whose psychological and spiritual suffering has persisted for years after having procured an abortion?

"TRUE REVOLUTION"

THAT ERRANT priests and religious face reflexive judgment in this life and particular judgment before God in the next is certain: “Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, for you know that we who teach shall be judged with greater strictness.”  [Jas 3:1]  Regarding the sanctity of all human life, what does the Lord himself teach? "For your lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning; of every beast I will require it and of man; of every man's brother I will require the life of man. Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for God made man in his own image."  [Gen 9:5-6]

THE CROSS of Christ is something altogether different: “This is the most complete revolution that has ever been preached; in fact, it is the only true revolution, because all the others demand the extermination of somebody else, but this one means the death of the man who, for all practical purposes, you have come to think of as your own self.”  [Thomas Merton NEW SEEDS OF CONTEMPLATION New Directions: NY 1961 p. 144]

SUSTAINED BY GRACE

ONE THING is clear: the mission of the Church is and always has been the salvation and care of souls. The care of souls includes the healing ministry of the Church offered to all who have committed offenses against human life. Hence the Culture of Life begins with a redemptive death like Christ's and is sustained by the divine grace that leads one to reconciliation and the peace which only Christ can give.

FOR IF we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For he who has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him.

FOR WE know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. [Rom 6:5-11]

Ask women who have suffered through abortion:  Is the bromide no one knows when the soul enters the body comforting? Does it wipe away the almost unbearable spiritual and emotional distress that follows an abortion? Does it make a mother forget the pain of violent separation from her unborn child? Does it make her feel good about herself? Does it make everything okay? Does time erase everything? No, not ever. No thinking, feeling human being could answer yes to these questions.

MISSION OF THE CHURCH

LISTEN TO what the Lord says: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Mt 28:30]  The mission of the Church is to lead the repentant sinner to Christ for the sake of reconciliation and healing.

ALL WHO are conscience-stricken for committing offenses against life are welcomed by Holy Mother Church who offers the Sacrament of Confession that such sins may be loosed on earth and in heaven. [cf. Mt 16:19]  The Epistle of James instructs all members of the Church to contribute to the ministry of healing: “My brethren, if any one among you wanders from the truth and some one brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.” [Jas 19-20]

GOD KNOWS!

ONE MUST always be alarmed by priests and religious who publicly advocate and justify abortion if that is what happened in this case; very likely the sister’s perverted testimony will result in the direct death of an unborn child if a pregnant woman is persuaded by her dangerous dissent. Writing a strong letter to the sister's superior and her provincial and sending a copy to her diocesan bishop seems to be in order.

BY ALL means, pray for the sister and have Masses offered for the sake of her immediate conversion. But for the sake of your salvation, it may be vitally necessary for you to shun her company, shaking the dust from your feet as you depart:  “And if any one will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”  [Mt 10:14-16]  No one knows when the soul enters the body? God knows!
