WHAT THEN is my reward? Just this: that in my preaching I may make the gospel free of charge, not making full use of my right in the gospel. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. [1Cor 9:18, 22-24]

ADVENTUS CHRISTI
What is the mission of Adventus Christi?
ADVENTUS CHRISTI provides reliable Catholic homily resources to Christian faith communities. Founded in 2002, Adventus Christi brings people to Christ by offering scriptural, doctrinal, and catechetical resources on the internet to foster personal spiritual growth, respect for Catholic teachings, and conscientious Catholic liturgies in union with the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church.
What does "adventus Christi" mean?
THE PHRASE "adventus Christi" is Latin. It refers to the approach or coming of the Lord Jesus, the procession of Christ to meet his Church in the order of time. "Adventus" is the Latin from which the English word "advent" is derived.
Is the coming of Christ attested by Sacred Scripture?
THE SACRED Scriptures, referring to the advent of the long-awaited Messiah, give testimony to Jesus as the infant son of the Virgin Mary and as the Christ of glory:
FOR TO us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [Isaiah 9:6]
IN THAT day the root of Jesse shall stand as an ensign to the peoples; him shall the nations seek, and his dwellings shall be glorious. [Isaiah 11:10]
AND NOW, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that every one who does right is born of him. [1John 2:28-29]
I HAVE fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. [2 Timothy 4:7-8]
What is the "new evangelization"?
THIS QUESTION may be addressed by the following three excerpts taken from "Pastores Dabo Vobis (I Will Give You Shepherds), On the formation of Priests in the Circumstances of the Present Day", Apostolic Exhortation promulgated by Pope John Paul II on March 25, 1992:
IN THIS way the Church feels that she can face the difficulties and challenges of this new period of history and can also provide, in the present and in the future, priests who are well trained to be convinced and fervent ministers of the new evangelization, faithful and generous servants of Jesus Christ and of the human family.
TODAY, IN particular, the pressing pastoral task of the new evangelization calls for the involvement of the entire People of God, and requires a new fervour, new methods and a new expression for the announcing and witnessing of the Gospel. This task demands priests who are deeply and fully immersed in the mystery of Christ and capable of embodying a new style of pastoral life, marked by a profound communion with the Pope, the Bishops and other priests, and a fruitful cooperation with the lay faithful, always respecting and fostering the different roles, charisms and ministries present within the ecclesial community. [Cf. "Propositio" 12. 39. ]
A LOVING knowledge of the word of God and a prayerful familiarity with it are specifically important for the prophetic ministry of the priest. They are a fundamental condition for such a ministry to be carried out suitably, especially if we bear in mind the new evangelization which the Church today is called to undertake. The Council tells us: All clerics, particularly priests of Christ and others who, as deacons or catechists, are officially engaged in the ministry of the word, should immerse themselves in the Scriptures by constant sacred reading and diligent study.
FOR IT must not happen that anyone becomes an empty preacher of the word of God to others, not being a hearer of the word of God in his own heart (St. Augustine, Sermon 179, 1: PL 8:966), [when he ought to be sharing the boundless riches of the divine Word with the faithful committed to his care, especially in the sacred liturgy.] [Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation 25.]
How is the homiletic content organized on the Adventus Christi website?
THE HOMILETIC content of this website is presented in continuity with THE ROMAN MISSAL LECTIONARY FOR MASS Vol. I - II, New York: Catholic Book Publishing Company, 2002. The LECTIONARY FOR MASS is published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and confirmed by the Apostolic See.
What version of the Bible is used by Adventus Christi?
THE PREFERRED biblical text for this website is the REVISED STANDARD VERSION - CATHOLIC EDITION. [Old Testament Section, 1952; New Testament Section, First Edition, 1946; Second Edition 1971] Exceptions to this, if any, are noted.
What is the significance of your website logo?
"THE MONOGRAM of Christ" is displayed in the Vatican Museo Pio Cristiano I, Rome, Italy. The circular wreath frames the "chi-rho", the Christian symbol formed by the first and second letters of the Greek spelling of the word Christ. The two Greek letters resemble the letter X (chi) and the letter P (rho) of the English alphabet. The chi-rho, called also chrismon and christogram, is emblematic of Christ's victory over sin and death. Sheltered in the arms of the chi are the alpha and omega--the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet--often pictured in conjunction with the cross in ecclesiastical decoration. The alpha and omega represent Christ's eternity, mastery over creation, and sovereign authority over the beginning and end of human time. [cf. Rev. 1:8]
